Message from the Principal

Welcome to the website of Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT). Thank you for visiting us. Our website will, we hope, give you a flavour of what makes UICT special, in terms of our academic programmes and business connections, whether you are a student, employer or prospective colleague.

Our institution has come a long way in a short amount of time and we currently have over 1800 students from Uganda and neighbouring countries. We have a strong professional orientation with a focus on academic excellence and indeed this is reflected in our motto “In Quest of Excellence” which also appears in out logo.

UICT is becoming a powerful player in the economy Uganda. We are at the hub of a network of educational, business and local government partners and will be playing our part in the country and the region’s transformation and development using ICT in the next decade. Our graduates are currently key in managing and maintaining telecommunications devices, and ICT solutions.

UICT which was established in 1965 as the East African Posts and Telecommunications Training Centre. Following the enactment of the Uganda Communications Act, 1997, the training centre was transferred to the Uganda Communications Commission. In October 2005, UICT was established as a public tertiary institution by the Ministry of Education and Sports under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001. In November 2007, the Ministry of Education and Sports transferred the management of the Institute to the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MoICT).This followed a decision by the government which identified the Institute to be of strategic importance in the transformation of the Ugandan society through ICT training and application. The passage of the Communications Act 2013 has once again placed UICT in a special relationship with UCC who have been mandated to manage and operate UICT.

Society is changing rapidly in ways which will have a profound impact on the role of institutions of higher learning and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a fast-paced sector, with continual changes taking place across the industry. Substantial changes have also taken place in the national and global economy and in the higher education sector in Uganda over the last two years. UICT has been challenged to take ICT to the next level nationally and regionally. Training, research, development and innovation activities and professional services in ICT currently offered and performed at UICT shall be have to be greatly enhanced. The Institute has recently installed state-of-the-art facilities such as in our new Electronics Lab, and has been providing high caliber staff training. Therefore with a visionary and hardworking core of young dedicated, committed and talented staff in place, strong unwavering government support and an increasing number of collaborators and partners, together with the support of alumni and friends, we will be up to the challenge.

UICT is committed to ensuring that its communities of interest are well informed of our goals and activities. On this website, you will find information on the Institute's teaching and programme’s strengths, which offer so much of learning. Our challenge for the future is to build on this strong base to establish ourselves firmly among the nation's leading institutions of higher learning

I hope you enjoy your virtual ‘UICT Experience’.
